Dr. Annie Reiner received her B.A. degree from UCLA in 1973, her MSW from USC in 1975, and was licensed as an L.C.S.W. by the California State Board of Behavioral Examiners in 1978. She received her Ph.D. in Psychoanalysis and her Psy.D. in Psychoanalysis from The Psychoanalytic Center Of California in 2007.
Dr. Reiner is currently a member and assistant faculty member of The Psychoanalytic Center Of California (PCC), and a fellow of the International Psychoanalytic Association (IPA). Her work was influenced by the ideas of Wilfred Bion, with whom she studied in the mid 70's. Her psychoanalytic writings have been published in various journals and anthologies. In addition to her work and writings as a psychoanalyst, Dr. Reiner is an accomplished playwright, poet and painter. She is the author of four books of poems, a book of short stories, and four children's books, which she also illustrated. She maintains a private practice in Beverly Hills, California.
Her most recent publication is The Quest For Conscience And The Birth Of The Mind (Karnac Books, 2009), a study of conscience and morality which reexamines Freud's theory of the superego. She puts forward the idea of what she describes as a "mature" conscience" or a "conscience capable of maturation" which may develop along different lines than the classical notion of the superego. Dr. Reiner's perspective on conscience is of a human potential which has yet to be realized, a potential, however, toward which human beings are naturally driven by an essential need for truth.
